Sta. Ana originated from “Namayan”, said to be oldest of three kingdoms which existed in the 13th Century, 200 years before the Spaniards arrived. It dominated the coastline of Pasig River up to Laguna de Bay. When the “Spanish conquistadores” arrived, they established settlements in Santa Ana that served as the seat of Namayan kingdom with the area bequeathed to Franciscan missionaries. In 1578 the Franciscans were the first to establish a mission outside of the walled city of Intramuros, which was then the center of power in Manila. As could be expected building a church would be among the first priorities of the friars. The Santa Ana Church was then built in 1720. Namayan was later changed to “Santa Ana” by the friars which meant the place will be under the patronage of the Virgin Mary’s mother, St. Anne, and called the place “Santa Ana de Sapa”, which now became known as Sta. Ana.
In August, 2011, the Manila City Council passed the ordinance declaring Sta. Ana a heritage zone. Sta. Ana is full of historical sites. For example, an excavation site at the Santa Ana church yielded 11th century Sung dynasty pottery. Learning the origins of the place one would call home is reassuring of our individuality and a sense of pride to be exactly at the place where history was unearthed.
